Bangladeshi Islamic Scholar Claims Remarks Misinterpreted After Australia Cancels Visa

Mizanur Rahman Azhari has said his past statements were taken out of context after Australian authorities cancelled his visa over allegations of hate speech, according to international media reports.

The scholar, known for his large online following and lectures among Bangladeshi expatriate communities, had recently arrived in Australia to participate in events across major cities including Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra. However, his visa was revoked shortly after his arrival following objections from community groups.

The Australian Federation for Ethnic and Religious Minorities in Bangladesh raised concerns that his presence could inflame religious tensions and promote extremist rhetoric.

Speaking in parliament, Jonno Duniam alleged that the scholar had a documented history of controversial remarks, including statements viewed as offensive toward various religious and cultural groups. Reports also referenced previous restrictions on his travel, including a ban from entering the United Kingdom in 2021.

Authorities in Australia stated that the visa cancellation followed appeals from community leaders and political figures. Tony Burke was reportedly urged to take immediate action regarding the matter.

In response, Azhari denied the allegations, stating that no speeches had been delivered during his current visit. He claimed that older remarks were selectively used and misrepresented.

“I have not given any speech in Australia so far,” he said in a social media statement, adding that certain groups had taken isolated comments out of context to influence the decision. He emphasized his support for peaceful coexistence and communal harmony.

Despite his defence, Australian authorities have confirmed that he is awaiting deportation, and all scheduled events in Melbourne, Sydney, and Canberra have been cancelled.
